I composed Tournament in 1987, under the influence of Prokofiev in particular. Having been shown by a teacher the model of Barber’s Symphony No. 1, a symphony in one movement, I likewise followed a 4-movement (connected) plan, with the added feature of each musical section’s highlighting a different instrumental group as well as interval.
