October, 2023 – I completed a new Concert Overture for orchestra entitled Janus Overture (ca. 11 mins. in length). Tentative World Premiere by the Society of Musical Arts, Stephen Culbertson, Music Director, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield, NJ in Spring, 2025.


Summer news – I composed a new flute solo for Janet Watson Phillips. Hummingbird will be premiered this season, details TBA. The Snake River Manual of Style will be played by the Thompson-Kasler Duo at Western Michigan University on Sept. 6 on the Bullock Series. Maureen Hurd Hause performed two of my clarinet solos at the ICA Conference in Denver on July 6. She will be recording them commercially as well, with session dates planned for January, 2024.


June 28, 2023 – Worldwide digital release of Adventures of Freddy (2023 Remix). This is a fully remixed and remastered version of my first rock CD upon the 25th anniversary of its original release, and includes an amazing spatial mix, accessible via Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, and Qobuz.


The University of Michigan Symphony Band performed Tango Variations on March 10 (2023) and the video is now live at their YouTube channel. Previously they premiered and uploaded Branching (A Tree Symphony). Check out their fabulous work under the direction of Michael Haithcock, whose final concert leading to retirement was March 31.


Please note that all of my ensemble works (band, orchestra, chamber orchestra – constituting all rentals) and numerous chamber works (such as Struggle, Spelunk, and Sunken City, et al – which constitute all on-demand print) will no longer be published by Edward B. Marks as of March 29, 2023. They will be available through this website.


Two excellent saxophonists are playing Windy Day Poem on the same day, March 25, in their respective graduate recitals. Jarod Apple at Rutgers University and Wesley Taylor at Eastman School. March 25 will be a windy day.


Rock Formations will be performed at the 2022 Midwest Clinic in Chicago by its commissioner, The Capitol Quartet. See them play it on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 12:15. The sheet music is sold by Murphy Music Press, and they will have scores at the clinic.


Two festival performances are taking place: first, Maureen Hurd of Rutgers University plays Glenbower Wood at the Henri Selmer Summer Festival at Michigan State University on May 26, and then Italian virtuoso Filippo Lattanzi plays Fields for solo marimba at the FIPA North Percussion Festival in Amarante, Portugal on June 23. Both artists are also giving master classes at these events.


There will be a Drew University Composers Concert on campus in Madison, NJ on May 1 at 8:00 PM, in the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts. The World Premiere of my choral work, The Two Trees (text: W. B. Yeats), commissioned by the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor, Benjamin Cohen, Director, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day (April 22, 2020), is happening after a two-year COVID delay. The concert, entitled Music for the Meanwhile Earth, takes place April 24, 2022 at 5 PM in Ann Arbor at the First Congregational Church. More information here.

The progressive rock band, Advent, for whom I play bass guitar, released a new music video. Pas de Quatre is a brief instrumental reflective of work composed during the COVID lockdown, released Jan. 15 on YouTube and bandcamp. Check it out here.


On November 19, 2021 the University of Michigan Symphony Band under the direction of Michael Haithcock gave the World Premiere of my work commissioned by them, Branching (A Tree Symphony). I am thrilled to announce the World Premiere of my commissioned work for the University of Michigan Symphony Band. “Branching (A Tree Symphony)” will premiere November 19, 2021 at Hill Auditorium on the University of Michigan campus, 8:00 PM concert. On May 1 I released a new EP on all streaming outlets and on CD. Jade is now available everywhere. CDs are availble through CD Baby, Amazon Music, and bandcamp. Jade is the fruit of distanced work between September, 2020 and February, 2021. Five jazz and jazz-rock compositions arranged for varying instrumentations, and contributions of recordings of those parts by 15 fellow musicians.


I was commissioned to write a flute solo for Janet Watson Phillips in 2020. She unofficially premiered Dragonfly online as a Facebook Live on February 5, 2021 and has plans to program it in a post-quarantine world.


As COVID-19 continues to dampen live performance it is clear that online forums such as YouTube are the common venues for new work. I have been active in this regard, and invite you to enjoy the following “premieres” and new offerings at my YouTube channel. 1) an archival video of the 2nd ever performance of my Chamber Symphony, under my direction at the University of Michigan, from 1995; 2) a score scroll and electronic realization of my recently completed Piano Concerto; and 3) a premiere with video of an original gymnopédie for solo piano entitled Nacktes Stück (Naked Piece). I will perform the Premiere my song cycle for Baritone and Piano on poetry of W.B. Yeats, A Yeats Cycle, on June 9 (5 PM EST) online here, with Maureen Hurd Hause accompanying. It is dedicated to Maureen, and was completed in 2020.


Two works that I composed for Selmer clarinet Artist, Maureen Hurd Hause, will receive their premieres at the Henri Selmer Paris Summer Academy. Normally held at Michigan State University, the 2020 installment will proceed online, May 28. The works are Tower House for solo clarinet, a partial product of our Burren College of Art residency, and Evening Dance, for clarinet and piano.

I am thrilled to have been commissioned for a major new work for large wind ensemble by the University of Michigan Symphony Band. At the present time the timeline for premiere and is unclear due to the ramifications of COVID-19.


I am excited to be joining the progressive rock band Advent as bassist (and other auxiliary things). Based in New Jersey, they have established a 30-year reputation as a premiere modern prog rock ensemble. [March 16, 2020]


I am pleased to be teaching Electronic Music Composition at Drew University for Spring, 2020. In March, the University of Michigan Symphony Band (Haithcock) has scheduled Tango Variations in Hill Auditorium, where they premiered it 10/20/10.


I am honored to have been commissioned by the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor, Benjamin Cohen, Director, as the featured composer for their concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day (April 22, 2020). My edition/orchestration/arrangement of the famous Cuban zarzulea, Cecilia Valdes by Gonzalo Roig will receive its crowning production outside of Cuba by the El Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid. It ran from January 24 to February 9, 2020. Full video is here.


Windy Day Poem (2017) for soprano sax and piano has now been released on Blue Griffin Recordings, performed by the Creviston Duo (Christopher and Hannah). It may be purchased on CD or streamed on all commercial outlets. It may also be heard at this site.


In March (2019) my wife and I were in residence at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland, Co. Clare, where we worked on material for her next album and related live performance. The heart of the project is a clarinet recital, but one that draws in electronics, visuals, and spoken word, and one that speaks to her (and my) interest in Irish culture. We also were in residence at Greywood Arts in Killeagh, Co. Cork in May. Through it all we had a joyous (and educational) time being active in Northwestern Co. Clare’s bustling and welcoming traditional music scene.

My new prog rock album was released on October 21! Over two years in the making, Plastic Island Pentecost contains a variety of crossover classical-rock instrumentals and features some great guest artists: Paul Brantley, cello, Maureen Hurd, clarinet, David Nadal, classical guitar, Elena Hause, vocal, Holly Nadal, vocals, Holland Jancaitis, organ, and it was mixed, with a special drum cameo, by John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, The Red Krayola). A big congratulations to Phill O’Neill of Australia for winning 1st Prize in the 2018 ICTUS International Trumpet Competition, age 26 and over category. ICTUS is an innovative new online-only music competition. I thank him and his percussionist Hugh Tidy for playing (and recording) Street Jam so wonderfully. Check out their great video!


Pei-Yin Hsieh, Concertmaster of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and Chaoi Chou, piano, gave the World Premiere of two movements of my Suite for Violin and Piano on August 29 at Hsih Chien University Kaohsiung Campus, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.


Maureen Hurd will Premiere my solo clarinet “bauble,” The Bob Barcarolle at ICA ClarinetFest in Ostend, Belgium on July 7. 🙂


I have been excited to learn about the upcoming World Premiere and other performances of my commissioned piece for soprano sax and piano, Windy Day Poem. Christopher Creviston will premiere it on February 23 on his faculty recital at Arizona State University, with his Hannah Creviston accompanying. They will play it again at the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Biennial at the Cincinnati Conservatory on March 8. David Stambler (another co-commissioner, as are Joseph Lulloff and Henning Schröder) will give its European Premiere at the World Saxophone Congress (July 10-14) in Zagreb, Croatia.


The book containing the images found in the headers of this website, Brooklyn’s Sweet Ruin by Paul Raphaelson, is now available. It’s images hang in Manhattan’s Front Room Gallery until January 14, 2018, and it was written up on Smithsonian.com.

July, 2017 – I completed Windy Day Poem for Soprano Saxophone and Piano, which will receive its premiere in the coming season by the commissioners: Christopher Creviston, Joseph Lulloff, Henning Schröder and David Stambler.


I have uploaded a few new and exciting things. My Piano Quartet (“The River”) is finished, now with (combo of live and electronic) audio and score. My new arrangement of Little Suite (“The Seasons”) for small orchestra is up – live audio and score. And enhanced, exciting audio for the 4th movement of Symphony No. 2, again, with score.


Rock Formations for saxophone quartet is now available. Contact me if you wish to procure a score and parts.


I have arranged my Little Suite for Piano (The Seasons) for small orchestra on a commission from the PCC Symphony Orchestra in Greenville, NC (my hometown), and will conduct its premiere on May 2. For details, see PERFORMANCES at this website. The concert will also honor my father, Robert Hause, by playing his arrangements (here is one of them) and some of his perennial pops orchestra favorites that he used to conduct with the local orchestra.


I have received a consortium commission for a work for soprano saxophone and piano by the Capitol Quartet members, Christopher Creviston, Joseph Lulloff, Henning Schröder and David Stambler. It will be ready in Fall, 2017.


I had a great time on a panel about music commissioning with Michael Haithcock (University of Michigan Director of Bands) and Randal Swiggum (Elgin Youth Symphony and many others) at Carnegie Hall’s 2016 Music Educators Workshop on July 16. Carnegie pic


The Greenville, N.C. newspaper, The Daily Reflector, interviewed me and attended the Rose High School performance of The Four Winds on May 17, which was a wonderful event, and very meaningful to me. The Four Winds receives a double premiere! First, the Ann Arbor Concert Band under James Nissen at the Michigan Theater, Ann Arbor, 2 PM on May 15. Rose High School on their Spring Concert in Greenville, NC, 7:00 PM at the high school.
